In the Warcraft universe, Arthas is a prince of the Kingdom of Lordaeron, which is under attack by a mysterious Undead force called the Scourge. The Scourge bolsters its forces via the Plague of Undeath, an as-of-yet new and unfamiliar affliction. It has already affected several smaller towns, and seems to inevitably transform anyone afflicted into a mindless Undead servant. The civilian population of Stratholme, one of the kingdom's largest cities, has unknowingly consumed infected grain. The citizens currently appear healthy, but will soon be affected by the Plague. Believing that it is too late and that there is no cure, and against the advice of high-ranking paladins and mages of the realm, Arthas orders his forces to massacre the entire population of Stratholme before they turn into the Undead. This event is known as the Culling of Stratholme.

For the purposes of this debate, there are two major theological responses when faced with human suffering. Fideism holds that the faithful should trust and accept divine order even when suffering is incomprehensible, because ultimate justice lies beyond ordinary human understanding. Theomachy holds that the faithful may question, challenge, or even accuse the divine in pursuit of justice, drawing on traditions of sacred protest, lament, and spiritual awakening.
